Frame by Frame in Alight Motion: A Deeper Look
This is a follow-up to the previous post about how I use Alight Motion. That one got more attention than I expected — so let me go deeper into the part that people seem to want to understand most: frame by frame animation.
Mouths from Sketchbook — frame by frame lip sync
When a character needs to speak, I draw all the mouth shapes separately in Sketchbook — different positions for different sounds. Open, half-open, closed, round, wide. I export each one as a PNG.
Then in Alight Motion I place them on a layer, one by one, frame by frame — timed to match the voiceover. It is slow. But the result is something no automatic lip sync tool can give you: it feels alive.
The key is to not try to match every single sound perfectly. Match the rhythm. Match the emotion. The eyes and body do the rest.
Vector points — frame by frame the hard way
For vector shapes I use the vector drawing tool inside Alight Motion. I set anchor points, then on the next keyframe I move those points to a new position. This gives smooth morphing between shapes.
It looks complicated. The first time I tried it, I deleted everything three times. But once you understand that each keyframe is just a new position for the same points — it becomes logical. Slow, but logical.
The layer eye — my most important tool
The small eye icon on the left side of each layer in Alight Motion is the feature I use more than anything else. I keep 4, 5, sometimes 10 versions of the same element — different mouths, different hand positions, different expressions — all hidden.
When I need one, I show it. When I don't, I hide it. Nothing gets deleted. Everything waits.
In my creative process, I don't think too much — I try. Whatever I like more, I keep. The hidden layers are my safety net and my laboratory at the same time.
Why collage gives more freedom than drawing everything
In traditional 2D animation, every frame is drawn from scratch. In collage animation, I build a library of pieces. A fist. An open palm. A closed eye. An open eye. Eyebrows up. Eyebrows down. Dozens of cut-out elements, ready to be combined.
This is not laziness. This is a different philosophy. The combinations are infinite. The result is always unique.
It reminds me of Louis de Funès in L'homme orchestre — humming musical ideas to his musicians, trusting them to catch his wave. I don't direct every pixel. I set the pieces in motion and let them find the story.
The honest answer to "can you do frame by frame in Alight Motion?"
Yes. But it is not the same as dedicated frame by frame apps like FlipaClip or Rough Animator. Alight Motion is a compositing and motion tool that can do frame by frame — if you understand its logic.
The advantage: you can mix frame by frame with everything else in the same project. Collage elements, vector shapes, effects, text — all in one timeline. That combination is what makes my work look the way it does.
